But they have found a great deal of currency in popular culture. The authors make frequent reference to Carnes, as he created a sex addiction cottage industry almost single-handedly, publishing a journal of research, establishing a certification program for therapists, creating self-diagnostic tools on his web site SexHelp. It becomes clear that diagnostic criteria are completely lacking objective criteria and are vague enough to encompass normal behavior. We see the differences in how highly-sexed individuals have represented their own behavior in their memoirs, which run the gamut from those who see their sexual activity in a positive light to those who embrace the concept of addiction. This is an informative and very readable volume. The authors do not dispute that sexual behavior can be problematic or that some individuals may benefit from advice in addressing pathological behavior. This begs the question of how, exactly, an addiction or disorder should be defined, but that discussion is beyond the scope of this book. A truly fascinating discussion of how socially "unacceptable" behaviour is medicalized as a stage in normalizing it. The authors take few shortcuts in thus short but well written book.
